SAYSKY LAYERING GUIDE - SPRING EDITION

We think that we all long for the arrival of Summer, eagerly anticipating the opportunity to jog under the blazing sun, wearing nothing but a singlet and a pair of split shorts. But for now, let’s embrace the spring weather by ensuring that you’re dressed appropriately for your runs - not wearing too much, yet not wearing too little.

In the guide you’ll find answers on:

  • Different layers and their purpose when running
  • How many layers to wear
  • Extra layering

Spring weather can be quite challenging. There will be days where it’s humid and warm, and days where it’s windy and cold. That’s why running in these conditions can demand a bit more strategic approach to your clothing.

MORE LAYERS OR LESS LAYERS?

The art of layering involves combining technical fabrics to maintain comfort, regulate temperature, and enhance performance. After this guide you’ll be able to experiment with different combinations of layers during your training to find the perfect balance of comfort, performance and protection that is best suited for your preferences.

SO HOW MANY LAYERS ARE THERE?

When preparing for a run during spring time, consider organising your outfit into three layers. Of course you should take into account the temperature and weather conditions.

The 3 layers that you should know about are.

  1. Base layer: moisture management

  2. Middle layer: insulation

  3. Outer layer: weather protection

BASE LAYER: MOISTURE MANAGEMENT

The base layer plays a crucial role in your overall comfort on the run - It’s actually not made to keep you warm, but is made with moisture-wicking materials like polyester that keeps sweat away from your skin, preventing discomfort and chafing. Some of us have probably experienced the bleeding nipple from too much chafing - the baselayer can prevent this from happening. We would recommend some mesh layers, which you can find here. These materials keep you dry on cooler mornings while ensuring breathability as the day warms up.

MIDDLE LAYER: INSULATION

For the chilly spring mornings, a middle layer with insulating features could come in handy. Choose a lightweight and breathable t-shirt or long sleeve. This layer traps warmth without causing overheating, making it adaptable to the changing temperatures of spring - here you can see some of our recommendations for t-shirts and long sleeves.

OUTER LAYER: WEATHER PROTECTION

As spring often brings unexpected showers and gusts of wind, an outer layer is key. Wind and water resistant jackets with ventilation is just what you need for when the weather is a bit more challenging. Luckily we have many great breathable, wind and waterproof jackets to choose from.

EXTRA LAYERS?

On some spring days it could be wise to choose to accessorise before a run. A lightweight cap shields your face from the sun, and gloves can be handy for chilly morning starts. Browse some of our many accessories here.

Spring can be brutal, and spring can be gentle. The key is to get a balance between staying warm on cooler mornings and remaining cool as the day progresses. Experiment with different combinations to find what works best for you and the ever-changing conditions in this transitional season.
